new to me cattle
« on: September 21, 2010, 04:35:48 PM »
I've been raising goats (dairy, meat and fiber) for 12+ years and just this year was able to finally get the mini cattle that I've been wanting for the past 6 years or so. However, I initially was looking into Dexters, but then chose lowline angus instead--the horns, or lack of, were part of what helped me make my decision. I got two pairs, one cow is a white park (she's so pretty--looks like a panda bear) and the other is 3/4 lowline. The white park girl has a part-lowline heifer calf and the lowline has a steer calf. They are supposedly both bred back, and I just needed to be part of a group that I can go to and ask questions. Like, if they were exposed to the bull during July and August, when can I start looking for them to calf? Will they bag up right before? Do they need to get their Covexin 8 shots 6 weeks in advance (this is all goat stuff that I'm accustomed to watching for).

Now I need to find a cow vet that is close by that I can hook up with as my goat vet is too far away and I just can't load the cows into the back of my dodge ram 50 pickup and take them to him.

Thank you,
Lani in Central Oregon

Cattle gestation period is 9 months.  No shots required for birthing, but assistance MIGHT be required.
